After the remarkable utilization of roller compacted concrete in structural works as in dam construction and by considering its strength especially in early ages, experts decided on using this concrete in works as road paving. One important factor of such pavements is long term performance. Regarding this factor, the substitution of pozzolanic materials with a percent of existing cement in mixture is a common choice in order to improve the durability factors and a better long term compressive strength. Owing to this change in cementitious materials, it is a general anticipation of the pozzolanic behavior to be observed that the early age compressive strength is decreased. On the other hand, somehow this defect will be compensenated in long term compressive strength. In addition, due to conventional loads of road pavements the tensile and flexural strength have their own importance. In this study, we considered the effects of Pozzolan and Limestone powder on mechanical behavior, water absorption and permeability of the roller compacted concrete. In this way 2 cementitious material percentages (12 and 15%) and 3 substitution material percentages (10, 15 and 20%) were used. Specimens used in this research were made in accordance with soil method and a vibrating hammer in used for compaction. The mentioned researches were carried on in 2 phases. The first phase was allocated to determining the optimum humidity needed for the mix design. In this phase 144 cubic samples (150*150*150 mm) and four humidity percentages (4, 4.75, 5.5 and 6.25 percent) were tested. In the second phase the main specimens’ properties with the obtained optimum humidity in the first phase were studied. The specimens include pressure ones in two different ages of 28 and 90 days (72 cubic samples 150*150*150 mm), flexural specimens (36 prismatic samples 100*100*350 mm), brazilian tensile, penetrable specimens (72 cylindrical samples 150*300 mm) and water absorbent specimens (36 cubic samples 100*100*100 mm). Using the obtained results, substituting Pozollan by cement in roller compacted concrete will bring us better results in comparison with limestone, a higher percent of cement (15%) and Pozzolan up to 20% will also improve the mechanical properties as well as the water absorption and permeability. By the end of the experimental tests’ construction and considering the results four optimum mix design were chosen in which the roller compacted concrete was used in field operation. Their core results showed the proper amount of compaction and 96% of the strength experimental specimens was obtained.
