The aliphatic quaternary ammonium cation is a useful cationic component of room temperature ionic liquids. The excellent dielectric properties of these salts offer advantages like enhanced reaction rates, easier workup and facilitated purification, when made them eligible as solvent in microwave assisted organic synthesis. The dipole characteristics of ionic liquid translate into rapid excitation by microwave and consequently faster reactions. According to mentioned properties of ionic liquids the following projects have been performed: Efficient and selective iodination of benzylic alcohols with sodium iodide in the presence of bronsted acidic ionic liquid triethyl ammonium hydrogen sulfate under microwave irradiation. Protection of alcohols with 3,4 dihydro-2-H-pyran and catalytic amount (0.02 mmol or 2mmol %)of acidic ionic liquid triethyl(buthyl-4- sulfonyl ) ammonium toluene sulfonate [Et 3 N(CH 2 ) 4 SO 3 H] + [OTS] - . Protection of aldehydes with 1,3-ethanedithiol and catalytic amount (0.02 mmol or 2 mmol %) of acidic ionic liquid triethyl(buthyl-4- sulfonyl ) ammonium toluene sulfonate [Et 3 N(CH 2 ) 4 SO 3 H] + [OTS] - in good yield and short reaction time.
