In this work a new detector based on negative corona discharge was designed and constructed. This detector can be used separately or as a detector in gas chromatography. The variables of the detector such as the cell dimensions, temperature of the cell, gas flowrates and voltage between the two electrodes were optimized. In addition the chromatographic variables were optimized to obtain sharp and separate peaks. Chloroform as a test compound was used to evaluate the performance of the detector. The detection limit of chloroform was obtained 0.78 ng/mL and it’s dynamic range was almost 3.5 order of magnitude.
