In the domain of anthropology, color is considered as a special cultural symbol and the psychology of color examines its impact on the behavior and emotions of human beings. Color psychology has a great influence on the choice of designer colors for different clothing and the clothing for people of different ages, genders, occupations, social classes, languages, religions, and cultures. Many researches in different countries conducted on the psychology of colors, on the effect of colors on the minds of individuals and, on the color associations. Many recent studies have been conducted on the color emotion, harmony and preferences of Iranians, however, the few reports have been conducted on Iranian color associations and these reports suffer from the lake of appropriate data collection and valid analytical methods. Therefore, considering the effect of diverse variables on color associations, and in order to find possible similarities and differences between the Iranian color psychology and those of the other nations, this subject should be investigated using the connotation of the meanings and color psychology of Iranian people. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the Iranian color associations. To do so, 17 male and 17 female observers, for which their normal color vision were tested by Ishihara test book, were attended the experiment. These observers were all students of Isfahan University of Technology in 18-33 age range. the chosen colors were based on the research of the Gorji and her coworkers on Iranian basic color terms, including yellow, blue, red, green, orange, pink, brown, purple, turquoise, white, black and gray. Using the tristimulus values of the 12 colors, a characterized monitor, and with the aid of Matlab computer program, a graphic user interface for the presentation of the colors and their appropriate associated words to the observers were prepared. Then, on the basis of the reported results of the observers, the RMS, which indicates the accuracy of the observers, was calculated for all the words and all the colors. Due to the excessive number of associated words to each color, only two of the associated words that had the highest and lowest accuracies among male and female observers were analyzed. Also, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the relationship between the associated words. The results showed that although there are close relationships between many of the Iranian ( the present study observers) color associations and the one of the other countries, especially in the cases where there is an evolutionary cause for the association of meanings, there are significant differences, which demands a comprehensive study to understand these differences and to use its results in designing Iranian products, especially clothing.
