Braids are important category of technical textile because of their special properties. Braid is a kind of textile structure that consists of many yarns that are weaved together like a relatively thin fabric or cord like structure so that braid yarns path are not parallel with the braid axis and no two adjacent yarn could be found that twisted together completely. In general, braids are divided to two categories: two dimensional and three dimensional. There are various methods for weaving the three dimensional braids. One of these methods is the “4-step method” that its name is taken from the type of motion of its braiding machine. Nowadays 3-D braids are used in civil industry, aerospace, medical equipment manufacturing, automotive industry and also used as thermal and moisture insulator. In this research first, the feasibility of weaving 3-D braid by the 4-step method investigated. For this purpose, a wooden replica of the 3-D braiding machine was built and a 3-D braid was weaved by extracting necessary motions of yarn carriers. Then by having the technical knowledge of weaving the 3-D braid structure by this method, an automatic braiding machine was designed and manufactured. After manufacturing the machine, possibility of weaving a cubic braid with various materials was investigated and samples of nylon, polyester, acrylic and glass fiber with different yarn count was woven. To investigate the possibility of weaving different patterns with the machine, movement of yarn carriers simulated using MATLAB and various patterns obtained using different combination of carrier movements. Using the machine, some patterns with 16, 32 and 48 yarns was woven. We concluded that weaving of different patterns is possible. After this project, not only to the possibility of designing and manufacturing of three-dimensional braiding machine was obtained, but also existence of different paths to move the yarn carriers was realized that causes the possibility of weaving various patterns. Also the machine can weave 3-D braid with different materials such as carbon and glass fibers. Moreover angles of the braid yarns are changeable.
