Clematis ispahanica from Clematis genus and Clematide family is a medicinal, ornamental and probable forage plant. The plant is domesticated to Iran and Turkey. One of the valuable advantages of clematis is highly adaption to abiotic stresses. Drought stress is one of the most important and current stresses that limites agricultural productivity in the country especially in Isfahan region. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the response of morphological and biochemical traits under moderate and intense drought stress and its association with field drought tolerance in clematis. A population originated from Semirom (Isfahan) was evaluated under three contrasting levels of moisture regimes (control, mild and severe drought stress) in BaghAnary, experimental field of Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), located in the university for two years during March 2012 till July 2013. The results showed that drought stress significantly affected all of the measured traits. Effects of drought stress on dry weight were significant. Weight reductions from control to mild and intense drought stresses were21.36 and 28.87 %, respectively. Drought stress led to significant increase in the amount of the carotenoeid, chlorophyll a, proline, percent of the leaf essential oil yield and activity of peroxidase compared with control. In this study the minimum and maximum amount of leaf percent of the leaf essential oil yield were observed in intense and mild drought stresses, respectively. It was 0.29% and 0.65% in intense and mild drought stresses, respectively. Therefore, mild drought stress led to an increase in the percent of the leaf essential oil yield. Furthermore,theresults ofthisstudy demonstrated that evaluated morphological and physiological traitshada widerange at each threestress conditions, indicatinga high diversity among studied plants regarding thesetraits.Results of the production ofseedsfrom selfing showed that Clematis is probably a self-pollinating plant. In additionaccording tothe longflowering period in this plant, leaf inflorescence and its resistant to seed shattering, Clamatisispahanica could beconsideredas a planttobeautify thelandscape and green spaces.
