Considering Iran is one of the countries facing the problem of water scarcity, the application of management strategies for optimal water use in agriculture is significant. One of these solutions is the use of a variety of superabsorbent. Cocopeat and perlite are examples of this superabsorbent that are used in greenhouses. Perlite is one of the substances that is mixed with cocopeat to improve the connection between air and water of planet roots. Since the quality of the mixture depends on the degree of homogeneity of the mixed materials, the physical properties of cocopeat and perlite such as moisture absorption, apparent mass density relative to dry weight and friction coefficient were measured. In order to mix cocopeat and perlite, two types of double screw and plough blade mixer were designed. A double screw mixer with the length of 1 meter, an external diameter 160 mm, and step ratio of 0.5 was used. In addition, its performance was compared using a plough blade mixer with the length of 1 meter and 11 separate blade at the same capacity. The uniformity of the mixture at 3 rotational speed, 20, 40, and 60 rpm were measured. The function of the mixers is generally examined by particles with uniform geometry, since any change in the mixing geometry and the homogeneity of the material can have a dramatic effect on the quality of the mixture. In order to increase the mixing rate of screw mixer, the edges of the hook were shaped one by one between each step of the screws, which caused the mixing of the material more. With increasing the rotational speed of both mixers, due to the size and type of particles, the mixing time and the uniformity of the mixture decreased. The level of uniformity in the plough blade mixer was about 94.97%, 63.95%, and 62.93% and in the double screw mixer was about 19.87%, 19.87%, and 86.01%, respectively.
