Some 128specimens of Kura barb ( Barbuslacerta ) populationsfromTigris(55), Caspian Sea (34) andUrmia(39) basinswere caughtby seine net to compare their morphology. The sampleswere fixedin10% formalin and transferredto theFisheriesLaboratory of Isfahan University of Technology forichthyological studies.Morphologicalstudies were assessedby the traditional method, truss distances with10landmarksandgeometricmorphometrics with 14landmarks. Fortraditional morphologicalstudies, morphometric and meristic traitsand proportionswere used. For thestatistical analysis, analysis of variancefollowed byDuncan's test, nonparametricH. Kruskal-Wallis testandfactor analysis were used.Total length to fork length, standard length to total length, body depth to caudal peduncle length, body depth to standard length, head length to standard length, snout length to head length, postorbital length to head length, preanal length to standard length, predorsal length to preanal length, dorsal fin height to standard length, ventral fin length to standard length, pectoral fin length to standard length, body depth, snout length, eye diameter and dorsal fin heightshowedsignificant differences (P 0.05) among the three basins. Based onthe correlation matrixofthe traits, four factorswith a totalvariance of78.74% andan eigenvalues of overone, were extracted. Scatter plotof the firsttwofactorsinfactor analysis ofmorphometric traits and proportions showeda highoverlap. Evaluation ofthe measureddistancesshowedsignificant differences in 10truss distances, including truss 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 16and22(P 0.05). Based onthe correlation matrixofthe traits, one factorwith a variance of97.87% and anoveroneeigenvaluewas extracted. In the geometricmorphometricanalysis, landmarks 1, 4, 5, 11, 12, 13and14werethe most variable ones. Basedonthe correlation matrixofthe traits, two factorswith a totalvariance of60.96% and overone eigenvalues were extracted.Scatter plotof the firsttwofactorsinfactor analysis showeda highoverlap and there was noseparationamong them, buttheCanonical Variate Analysis (CVA)partially separated of the three basins. Sixmeristic traitsshowedsignificant differences (P 0.05) among the populations.Based onthe correlation matrixof thetraits, three factorswith a totalvariance of71.69% andoverone eigenvalues were extracted. Scatter plotof the firsttwofactorsinfactor analysis ofmeristic traits showedan extensive overlap. The results showed thattraditionalmethodsfailedto separatepopulationsofthe three basins, but trussand geometricmorphometricmethodswere ableto partlyseparate the populations. It can beconcluded that B. lacerta populationinthe threebasinshave a closeaffinitywitheach other and theycan be hardly separatedfrom each other.
