The roads are the main infrastructures of the mine production and are known as the physical assets of mines. Paying attention to their construction and maintenance leads to increment of the mine production and causes a major reduction in costs, including the machinery and road maintenance costs. Tire cost is one of the top rated costs associated with machinery that is directly affected by the mine roads. Nowadays, due to the political conditions and the restrictions of importing of this products, the optimization the consumption rate of these capital-intensive parts are essential for all Iranian mines. On the other hand, increasing the useful life of the tires is known as a great commitment in road maintenance process. In this s research the roads of Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine, is evaluated by focus on tire failures and wear. After identifying the main roads in terms of traffic volume, the intensity and distribution of functional defects, roughness, granulation of wearing course materials and geometric characteristics of each section of the road were evaluated. According to field studies, it was found that just 8.6% of roads are undamaged. Also, none of the studied roads have standard width, while 37% were identified as narrow and dangerous width. Based on laboratory studies and the results of wearing course material's granulation, it was found that a high percentage of road sections do not follow the proposed standard granulation. Analysis of shape indices of road wearing course materials showed that most of the particles are high elongated and sharp, which causes the destruction and high wear of the truck tire
