The increasing need for food has led farmers to produce vegetables and some fruits out of season without using sophisticated greenhouses. One of these alternatives cultivation methods is using low-height plastic tunnels. The low plastic tunnel is made by using curved wire-rods and inserting them into ground. Then the structure is covered with a plastic sheet. This method decreases the production inputs, such as water consumption, inorganic fertilizer and herbicide. Today, low-height plastic tunnels are often made manually or by semi-automatic devices, which lead to an increase in production cost and decreases farmers’ profit. The purpose of this research was to insert the bent rods automatically into the soil and then lay a plastic-sheet on the roof of the structure. In order to accomplish this goal, a device called automatic plastic-sheet laying machine was designed, constructed and evaluated. This device uses the pre-cut wires and then bends and inserts them into the ground; then it covers the roof of the structuree with plastic sheet, and finally covers the edges of plastic sheet with soil. The device was first designed using Solid Work software. After doing the necessary calculations, the device parts were first constructed and then were assembled in workshop. The device has seven parts as follows: 1) rod holding unit, 2) rod transfer unit (transferring rods from rod holding unit to the bending unit), 3) rod bending and inserting unit, 4) Plastic laying unit, 5) Pneumatic unit, 6) Control unit and7) Chassis. When the machine was ready, its performances were assessed experimentally. The results showed that an efficiency of 88% for inserting the curved rods into the soil was achieved. By choosing more suitable and precise sensors, the efficiency of the machine could be increased Keywords: Plastic sheet; Pneumatic; Plastic tunnels; Vegetables; Plastic laying unit
