Carrot is a hand harvested crop in Iran. This harvesting method is costly, even in some cases, the farmers left the crop in the ground due to high hand harvesting. In this country carrot harvesting has not been mechanized due to hand spearding of the seeds. In this study, a row crop harvesting machine was designed and developed for the carrot planted is a row crop. In mechanized agriculture root crops are harvested by two methods. In the first mechanism the products and the loosen soil around then are enter into machine, and the soil is removed from the products as they move through the machine. This type of harvesting machine is for products such as onions and potatoes, in which the roots are developed in shallow depth. However, for deep rooted products such as carrots and suger beets this type of machine are not suitable. For this type of products, the second mechanism has been developed. In this type of harvester, first a soil loosener, disturbed the soil without displacing the roots and then the roots pull out of the soil by grasping the leaves. In this research a carrot harvester was designed and developed for the crop planted in rows. The machine can loosen the soil around the roots without displacing the them; and then pull the roots out by grasping the leaves. In this research first, the force required to pull the carrot roots out of the soil was measured. Then the tensile strength of the leaves were determined using an Instron Universal Testing machine. To loosen the soil around the roots with minimom root displacement, two narrow shanks with sided regtanglar shares (L- type tool) was developed and tested with both different rake and tilt angles. The second unit of the machine was developed for pulling the loosened roots out of the soil. This unit is consisted of two belts facing each other and they keep together vsing some plastic rolls and springs. This unit can grasp the leaves of the loosened roots and pulls them out of the soil. The pressure between the belts was adjusted using the springs by considering the tensile strength of the leaves plus the friction coefficient of the leaves and the belts. Due to lack of carrot field for harvesting at the time of field evaluation of the machine, the machine with some adjustmend was evaluated in a suegr beet field. The field effiency of the machine for loosening and pull the roots out of the ground was 88% and its performance was acceptable for the farmers.
