In this study, dissimilar welding of AISI 347 austenitic stainless steel to incoloy 825 nickel base superalloy was investigated. The tungsten-gas arc welding method was also used to create this joint. ER 308L and Inconel 617 welding wire were used as welding filler metals, respectively. Different etching and electroetching methods using different solutions have been used to study the microstructure of different welding regions such as base metals, heat affected Zones and weld metals. The microstructure of the welded joints was also investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and characteristic X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Tensile, microhardness and impact tests were used to investigate the mechanical properties. Also, after performing tensile and impact tests, fractography of fracture surfaces was studied and analyzed. The results of microstructural analysis showed that weld metal of Inconel 617 filler metal due to different precipitation at the boundaries and within the grains, has a finer graine structure and inside of grain structure than weld metal of filler metal ER was 308l. Filler metal Inconel 617 produced higher hardness than base metals in weld metal. While the ER 308L filler metal not only produced a lower hardness than the base metals, but also the hardness varied widely across regions. The failure of the welded specimens in the tensile test of the Incoloy 825 base metal showed that the strength of the Inconel 617 weld metal was acceptable. But failure in the tensile test of the welded specimen with ER 308L filler occurred in the heat affected zone of the AISI 347 stainless steel base metal due to the presence of liquation cracks in the partial melted zone adjacent to the ER 308L weld metal. The impact energy of the weld metal was lower than that of the base metal, and the Inconel 617 weld metal showed higher toughness than the ER 308L weld metal. After reviewing all the results, the Inconel 617 filler metal was introduced as a better choice for bonding AISI 347 stainless steel to the Incoloy 825 than the ER 308L filler metal.
