Production and Evaluation of Suitable Gunning Refractory for Enhancement of Corrosion Resistance of Refractory Bricks Refractory corrosion decreases the life time of copper industry furnaces and the final deterioration. In this project development and life increase of magnesia chromite refractories is attended via producing a suitable gunning refractory. The effect of different binders, sodium tri polyphosphate, salicylic acid, Sulfamic acid, sodium meta silicate, boric acid and sodium hexa meta phosphate on physical and mechanical properties of samples fired at two different temperatures of 300C and 1150 C was studied. Fracture Strength by Brazilian Test, Bulk Density, Apparent Porosity, Total Porosity and Closed Porosity, weight percent Water Absorptio were measured. Hot Modulus of Rupture (HMOR), slag corrosion test were evaluated on selected samples. Optical Microscopy, Phase Analysis by XRD and SEM studies were performed. Results indicated that sodium hexa meta phosphate and Sulfamic acid with strengths of respectively 8.8 and 6.5 MPa at 300 C firing showed better results, Boric acid and sodium hexa meta phosphate samples fired at 1150 C with strengths of 3.8 and 3.2 MPa respectively indicated better results. Hot Modulus of Rupture test at 1200 C on three binders of Sulfamic acid, boric acid, sodium hexa meta phosphate, indicated that the strength with Sulfamic acid is almost three times of the other two. SEM of surface investigation showed that suitable binding is developed between particles and matrix. Presence of sulfur element at grain boundarie of Sulfamic acid binder confirmed successful binding. XRD results showed the phases of Cr 5 S 6 and Cr 7 S 8 phases at 300 C and Cr 2 N at 1150 C in Sulfamic acid binding. Phases of Mg 2 B 2 O 5 and Mg 3 B 2 O 6 at 300 C and 1150 C respectively were indicated at boric acid samples. Mg 2 P 2 O 7 , NaCrP 2 O 7 phases at 300 C and phases Mg 2 P 2 O 7 , NaCrP 2 O 7 and NaFe 2 O 3 phases at 1150 C were identified. Slag resistance tests indicated that sodium hexa meta phosphate binder is superior. Keywords : Binder, Gunning Mass, Slag Corrosion, Copper Industry Furnaces, Magnesia Chromite Refractories.
