Isfahan metropolis is the third most populated metropolis in Iran country. The population growth of Isfahan city in the recent years, the historical and cultural monuments in the central part of the city which cause some limitations for building new streets, the increasing demand for traortation service and the poor street surface to meet the demand have caused traortation and traffic problems in the city. Thus, the road network of the Isfahan city should be optimized in order to transfer the passengers. One the important procedures to solve the traortation and traffic problem of the Isfahan city is improving the public transit system. Although the bus network of Isfahan consisting of 1365 public buses, 200 privatized buses, 98 public and privatized lines and more than 2000 kilometers of line coverage transfers more than 900000 passengers per day, the relative proportion of this traortation mode in transferring the passengers in the city is very low. The improving of the bus network of Isfahan could attract the passengers from other traortation modes. One way of improving the bus network is decreasing the number of passenger transfers (getting on and off). Long route design in the bus network could decrease the number of transfers and improve the operation of bus network from the passengers' viewpoint and thus, attract them to the network. Moreover, this design could decrease the number of passengers getting on and off in the crowded squares of the city used as terminals. In the present research, first, the maps of people's willing for long-distance movement in Isfahan city were made by using EMME3 and Enif softwares in order to determine the candidate corridors and main routes for designing the long routes in the bus network of Isfahan city. Three steps were taken into consideration in making these maps: (1) making the network of willing to movement; (2) making the file of travel demand and; (3) assignment of travel demand to the network of willing to movement and making the map of willing to movement. Then, three long routes were suggested by merging the existing routes using the maps of people's willing for long-distance movement in Isfahan city, regarding some specific hypotheses for designing and consulting with the city's traortation experts. Then, the bus network was reformed according to the suggested routes. A base scenario based on the existing bus network of Isfahan city as well as some other scenarios for each of the new routes were made using the latest information in the Deputy of Traortation and Traffic of Isfahan Municipality to evaluate the suggested routes. Furthermore, the existing and the suggested situation were compared using the traffic assignment software (prog assign). The results obtained from evaluating these routes showed an improvement in the standards of stop time in the bus stops, total travel time, the vehicle's speed, headway, number of on-board passengers, passenger-kilometer and the speed of passenger movement which suggested that designing long routes in the bus network of Isfahan city was effective and improved the operation of this network.
