Consideration of sustainable development is one of the dominant approaches in traortation planning. Moving towards sustainable development needs adaptation of the system components on the components of sustainability. Intersections as part of the street network, play an important role in consequences such as control delay, fuel consumption and emissions. Appropriate signal timing, can greatly reduce the consequences of constructing intersections. An important factor that can be considered in the signal timing is level of fuel consumption. Despite of great importance, this factor is considered less than factors such as delay and emissions. In this study, by using fuel consumption model, average fuel consumption rate was calculated in different situations. Then by evaluating the effect of shock waves at the intersection,vehicle-time parameter in different situations, and total fuel consumption of each phase was determined. Finally, methods for signal timing based on fuel consumption was presented. To evaluate the proposed methods, selected intersection was simulated by AIMSUN. The results show that the intersection delay reduced 17.4 and 18.8 percent in fuel-based methods. Also the fuel consumption in fuel-based methods reduce according to the direct relationship betwee delay and fuel consumption at intersection. The other traffic parameters such as density, average queue length and number of stops has also declined.
