TITLE

scealing HVOF thermally sprayed WC-Co coatings by electroplating and sol - gel methods
Tungsten carbide has been known as a hard and wear resistant material. The composition of the alloy with soft metals such as cobalt (WC-Co), as a binder, improves the toughness of the brittle fracture of the composite. Coatings of WC-Co by thermal spraying on the surface of substrate are used widely in industries. Among the thermal spray techniques, high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) creates denser coatings with less pores. The performance of the coatings must be improved due to the layer structure and porosity for high corrosive environments. In this study, sealing of WC-12Co coatings by electroplating and Sol-Gel methods were investigated. WC-12Co powders were deposited on the steel substrates by HVOF method. The effect of sealing process on the corrosion and wear propertiesof the coatings were studied. In addition, the effect of another parameters such as surface finishing after electroplating and sol-gel methods and surface modification by hydrocholoric acid before sealing process were considered. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to characterize the morphology and properties of the obtained coatings before and after sealing process. High temperature wear properties of coatings before and after sealing were tested by pin- on- disk wear tester at 400°C. The cross- section of the sealed coatings showed that open porosities were blocked by electroplating and sol gel methods with thickness of about 13 and 14 µm, respectively. Results indicated that sealing process increased the microhardness of coatings slightly. Comparing the results of polarization at 3.5% NaCl solution and wear test showed that the corrosion current density decreased and wear resistance increased after sol-gel sealing. Also, the high temperature wear behavior of the sealed coatings was improved. Keywords: Sealing, WC-Co coatings, Electroplating, Sol-Gel, Corrosion, Wear.
