With the city's industrialization and expansion of industries day by day, concerns about the effects and harmfulness of their pollutants have increased. Consequently, the practical solutions should be considered to overcome their consequences. Industrial wastewater is one of the biggest environmental challenges to these plants. The wastewater characteristics depend on the processes of industrial plants and need different treatment approaches. Food industriesare one of the industries that have different types and consequently produce different wastewater. In this study, the wastewater treatment of Azin and Ardine flour and starch plants were investigated.Coagulation and flocculation process were used to remove organic matter in the wastewaters and as consequently wastewater treatment. The chitosan (CH) and modified zeolite with surfactant (SMZ)were used as coagulants. In order to modify zeolite, hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium surfactant (HDTMA) was used to increase its efficiency in the process of removing organic particles from wastewater. In order to do an experiment the parameters of the mixing time (0-8 minutes), pH (2-10), coagulant dose (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 2.5 and 5 g/L of chitosan and 0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 g/L of modified zeolite), settling time (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes) and mixing time (150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 rpm) were investigated. In each step of the experiment, total suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids(TDS) were measured to determine the optimal values of each parameter for each coagulant, and consequently with the optimal amount of each parameter, it was obtained that the maximum organic matter was removed at each step. The highest settlement occurred in the last stage. Results showed that CH and SMZ had a significant role in removing about 79 and 70 % of TSSand removing about 78 and 72 %of TDS from wastewater.the effectiveness of CH coagulant in removing process was more than SMZ, because the CHcould form larger and better flocs during the experiment and consequently, the settlement was more. However, for practical application of the results, the pilot tests and the economic feasibility of using these materials are recommended.
