Increasing production quality while reducing its costs has a significant impact on increasing the competitiveness of manufacturers. Also, due to the wide range of target markets and the rapid changes in customer needs and tastes, the flexibility and variety of production lines are vital for manufacturers. The use of flexible manufacturing systems greatly helps to overcome these problems and increases the production efficiency. One of the main components of flexible manufacturing systems are conveyors. meanwhile, belt conveyors are more widely used because of their simplicity of performance and their lower cost of construction and maintenance. For this purpose, a group project was defined and developed to design and fabricate a laboratory FMS at Isfahan University of Technology. In the present study, the design and construction of automated material handling unit in this system has been addressed. After the initial design, using the relationships provided by the manufacturer’s brochures, appropriate actuators for the conveyor belt were selected and the final design was performed. The conveyor belt has been constructed with facilities in the workshops of Isfahan University of Technology. Finally, the conveyor belt was installed along with other units of the system at Isfahan University of Technology’s Automation Laboratory.
