Iran has arid and semi-arid climate and always faces the problem of water shortage. The renewable water available in the country is about 130 billion cubic meters. More than 90 percent of that is allocated to the agricultural use. Therefore, it is necessary to use strategies for increasing water use efficiency in irrigation, soil moisture storage capacity and optimum use of water resources. In addition, salinity of soil and water resources increases the problem of limited water resources. More than 18 million hectares of the lands in Iran are affected by salinity. Salinity is one of the main factors affecting agricultural land degradation which in turn effects plant growth. Use of some minerals such as zeolite which is a mineral aluminum silicate and some super absorbent polymers (SAP) such as Hydrogel A 200 that have high ability to absorb water, are effective in reducing water loss. In this study, the effects of each of these water super absorbents were investigated under saline conditions .We used Hydrogel A200, at four levels (zero, 2, 4 and 6 g /kg soil), natural zeolite of Semnan (powdered) at four levels (zero, 10, 40 and 60 g /kg soil), and three levels of salinity (EC of : 0.4, 4 and 8 dS/m) in a loamy sand soil as a completely randomized factorial design in three replicates. Soil hydraulic properties (soil water characteristic curve, plant available water content and plant water use efficiency), some physical and chemical properties of soil and some indicators of plant growth of greenhouse cucumber ( Cucumis Sativus Danytu figure ) were measured. The results showed that zeolite increases water retention in soil. In the absence of salinity, lant available water was not increased, but in the saline conditions, zeolite, significantly increased plant available water and plant growth characteristics. Therefore, in irrigation with saline water with EC of 4 dS/m, use of 10 g zeolite, and i irrigation with EC of 8 dS/m, use of 40 g zeolite, has created the maximum vegetative shoot length, dry and wet weight of shoot and also plant available water. Zeolite decreased soil bulk density, in addition, being cheap and abundant is the benefits of natural zeolite in Iran. Application of Hydrogel, significantly increased plant available water and plant growth characteristics, and significantly reduced soil bulk density. On the other hand, use of Hydrogel significantly increased the concentration of potassium in soil and plants. Hydrogel treatment of 4 g/kg had the highest available water in the soil. Therefore, considering the economic aspects, the hydrogel used 4 g/kg in soil, moderate to light texture (loam and loamy - sand) is recommended.Listen
