The permanent fault on a transmission line is cleared by the line protection system and opening circuit breakers of two line ends. After line outage, exact determination of the fault location in the least possible time seriously affects on the time of reparation and restoration of the line and consequently on the power system reliability. Heretofore, numerous techniques have been proposed to locate power system faults. By development of phasor measurement units (PMU) which provides synchronous voltage and current phasors for power system operation and control center, the recent fault location algorithms have been developed based on the new facilities. The existence of PMUs in a power system makes this opportunity to use synchronous data through out system in fault location methods. The efficient algorithms make effort to locate the fault point with high accuracy using minimal number of PMUs data. The purpose of this thesis is to survey the presented fault location algorithms which use synchronous data measured by PMUs.
