Iran with the capacity of more than 80 million tons of yearly cement production is ranked third in the world and this figure will reach over 120 million tons per year in the coming years. Due to the increasing bitumen price in recent decades, the use of concrete pavement as a potential of replacement for asphalt pavement has been proposed in the country. With the manufacture of one ton of cement, approximately one ton of CO2 in the country, according to the annual production of cement, is released into the atmosphere that should be reconsidered by the cement production industry. Alkali activated slag with activation of ground granulated blast furnace slag by alkaline solution as a binder in concrete, in recent decades for replacement of cement have been investigated, even in some countries have been used. In this thesis, the possibility use of AAS system in roller compacted concrete has been investigated. The slag used was received from Esfahan steel company in the form of powder and was activated with liquid sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide. The slag for whole of the mix designs was identic and equal to 10% of weight aggregates and different concentrations of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate ratios for alkaline solution has been tested. Determination test of optimum moisture content, compressive strength and flexural strength of the samples, to evaluate the effect of concentration of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicates, also an experiment in order to find the optimum time to compress the concrete has been. In general, moisture content required to achieve maximum density of this concrete was observed lower than conventional RCC. Despite the lower binder paste, the compressive and flexural strength ranges were found more than conventional RCC. The initial setting time of concrete provides enough opportunity to conveyance, distribution and compaction of concrete. This concrete reaches its maximum strength without wet curing and leads to considerable savings in terms of production and implementation. Key words: Roller compacted concrete, alkali activated slag, sodium silicate, sodium hydroxide, compresive strength, flexural strength.
